Sex Pheromone Investigation of Anastrepha serpentina (Diptera: Tephritidae)
نویسندگان
چکیده
Attraction of virgin female Anastrepha serpentina Wiedemann (Diptera: Tephritidae) to the odor of calling males was demonstrated. This sex pheromone-mediated attraction occurred during the latter half of a 13-h photophase but not during the Þrst half of the day. Two major components of emissions of calling males, 2,5-dimethylpyrazine (DMP) and 3,6-dihydro-2,5-dimethylpyrazine (DHDMP), and trimethylpyrazine (TMP), a minor component, were tested for pheromonal activity. DMP and TMP elicited antennal responses using electroantennogram assays, but no response was observed for DHDMP. DMP and combinations of DMP and TMP were not attractive in laboratory bioassays. Bioassays of DHDMP were complicated by its instability making puriÞcation of the compound unfeasible. Bioassays of DHDMP in unpuriÞed form were further complicated by the presence of reaction byproducts and unreacted reagent in crude preparations of the DHDMP. However, statistical analysis indicated that combinations of 100Ð500 ng of DHDMP in mixtures with DMP as the major component elicited attraction in laboratory bioassays with sexually active female ßies. Taking into account all of the data, we could not conclude that any of the chemicals emitted by males are pheromones, but based on female ßy responses to mixtures of DHDMP and DMP, this is the most likely scenario.

First record of Anastrepha serpentina (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) in citrus in Brazil.
Anastrepha serpentina (Wiedemann) is recorded for the first time in citrus (Rutaceae) in Brazil. Specimens were obtained from sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) sampled in the municipalities of Belém and Capitão Poço, and from mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata) from Tomé-Açu, state of Pará, Brazil.
متن کاملSelivon & Perondini: Eggshell of Anastrepha species 347 DESCRIPTION OF ANASTREPHA SORORCULA AND A. SERPENTINA (DIPTERA: TEPHRITIDAE) EGGS
The morphology of Anastrepha sororcula Zucchi and A. serpentina (Wiedemann) eggs are described by scanning electron microscopy. A. sororcula eggs present a conspicuous sculpturing of the chorion at the micropylar end while the eggs of A. serpentina are devoid of such ornamentation. The sculpturing of the A. sororcula eggs, represented by ridges in a polygonal arrangement, is more developed in t...
متن کاملCurrent knowledge of the species complex Anastrepha fraterculus (Diptera, Tephritidae) in Brazil
The study of the species complex Anastrepha fraterculus (Af complex) in Brazil is especially important in a taxonomical, evolutionary and pest management context, because there are evidences that some of them may occur in sympatry. In this review, we analyzed the main results supporting evidences that three cryptic species occur in Brazil. The taxonomical and phylogenetic relationships based on...
متن کاملToxicity of Bacillus thuringiensis beta-exotoxin to three species of fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae).
The current study describes toxic effects of the Bacillus thuringiensis beta-exotoxin toward 3rd instars of 3 fruit fly species: Anastrepha ludens (Loew), A. obliqua (Macquart), and A. serpentina (Wiedemann). The beta-exotoxin was highly toxic to all 3 species tested, with LC50 values calculated as 0.641, 0.512, and 0.408 microgram/cm2 of filter paper used to expose the larvae, for A. ludens, A...

Oocyte counts, used as a measure of egg load, were compared among three different age groups (15, 30 and 45 days) of two polyphagous species of tephritid fruit flies, Anastrepha ludens and Anastrepha obliqua, which were exposed to varying conditions of diet (sucrose vs sucrose and protein), availability of oviposition substrate (present vs absent), adult female density (1, 2 and 4 females/cage)...
